Message from REIZ President

Dear Esteemed Members,

2020 is a very special year as the Real Estate Institute of Zimbabwe (REIZ) is now seventy five (75) years old. This is an admirable attainment and a clear testimony of the pedigree and resilience of the Institute. On the 12th of February 1945 REIZ was established and has over the years grown both in stature and membership levels. All past presidents, vice presidents, board members and members of REIZ played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the Institute.

Several events and activities were lined up as part of the birthday celebrations starting with this commemorative memo and a golf day which was held in February at the Chapman Golf course. A supplement was also published in the local press. A sports tournament was scheduled to be held in March where members of REIZ and the Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners (ZIRUP) were to compete in various sporting disciplines including football, netball, volley ball, chess and golf. The celebrations were to culminate in the joint hosting of the REIZ 75th Winter School with the Commonwealth Association for Surveying and Land Economy (CASLE) in Victoria Falls in August this year and then we had an unwelcome visitor in the name of Covid-19 which has thrown all plans out of perspective.

In June 2017 REIZ adopted a five (5) year strategic plan. Our vision is “To be a globally recognized real estate professional body” and our mission is “We exist to enhance the provision of resources to the real estate practitioners for sustainable delivery of value added services benchmarked to global standards” The strategic plan is and should remain the guiding beacon for the next 75 years and beyond. The bedrock of REIZ is its members and as such no stone should be left unturned to ensure members needs and expectations are met at all times.

Drawing from international best practice, the new thrust should be focused on continued growth of membership, research and education and training development. Since its establishment in London in 1868, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has focused on research and training resulting in it becoming a renowned global institution which is representative of a cross section of practitioners in the built environment. This is praiseworthy and should be emulated.

In rolling out the strategic plan there is need for REIZ to remain the fulcrum for research and training of all real estate practitioners. In this context the Institute must play a facilitative role in ensuring Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training programmes are rolled out on a regular basis. A robust research model has been put in place and will continue to be reviewed in line with the dictates of the expectations and requirements of the real estate sector and with international best practice.

The launch of the Corporate Membership admissions drive in October 2019 has ignited a renewed sense of hope and pride as this should not only improve our membership levels but should boost our revenue inflows.

As we all celebrate this momentous occasion let us all be mindful of the need to remain united and maintain the highest standard of integrity in all that we do.

Happy Birthday REIZ!

God Bless REIZ!

Thank you

A Millin

REIZ President
